Kane Williamson Retires from All International Cricket

New Zealand cricketing great & former Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson has retired from international cricket, bowing out of a glittering 16-year career. This announcement was more about Williamson missing the remaining Test matches at The Oval and Trent Bridge during New Zealand’s current three-match Test series against England.

The 35-year-old batsman was part of the New Zealand defeat in the first Test at Lord’s after having scored 0 and 18. After the game, Williamson told New Zealand Cricket (NZC) that he had decided to withdraw from international commitments immediately.

Williams said in a NZC statement he had pondered over his future for a while and this felt like an appropriate time to move on. He thanked his family, and for the opportunity to represent New Zealand and that he always strived to give everything whenever he slipped on a national jersey.

Williamson leaves as one of the finest cricketers New Zealand has ever had. He is the leading run scorer from his country in Test matches, where he compiled 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06 in 110 Tests. In addition to that, he amassed 7,256 runs in 175 One-Day Internationals and 2,575 runs in 93 T20 Internationals.

In 2021, he captained New Zealand to the championship of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final against India National Cricket Team – one of major career-defining moments. He took charge of the national team during a golden age, with New Zealand regularly competing for major ICC trophies, reaching the finals of both the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup as well as several semifinal spots.

Williamson captained New Zealand in 40 Tests, 91 ODIs and 75 T20Is. From a calm style of leadership to his consistency with the bat and professionalism, he earned respect from all over the globe.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter hailed Williamson as a “special player, leader and teammate” Walter described a lasting impact by Williamson on the team’s culture and standards, saying,”The legacy of Kane Williamson will influence New Zealand cricket for various years to come.”

Williamson was already planning for a world beyond international cricket. In 2025, he became a strategic advisor for IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants which was seen as a step towards his phased mother’s exit from international cricket. In late 2025, he had also taken retirement from T20I cricket.

World cricket says goodbye to one of the modern-greatest batters with him. Williamson’s career and steady greatness has had an everlasting impact on New Zealand cricket and himself in the world of cricket.
